Choosing trimming and carving tools

Trimming removes extra weight from the bottom of a leather-hard pot and carves the foot ring. Loop and ribbon tools do most of this work: wide loops remove clay quickly, while small, sharp loops refine the inside of the foot and tight curves. Square and triangular loops cut crisp steps and corners.

Needle and detail tools mark the foot, check base thickness and clean up small areas, and carving tools add surface pattern. Keep loops sharp: a sharp tool cuts clean ribbons and chatters less.

Common questions

When is a pot ready to trim?

At leather-hard: firm enough to turn upside down without bending, but soft enough that the tool shaves off clean ribbons of clay rather than powder.

What is the difference between loop and ribbon tools?

Both are shaped wire or metal strips on a handle. Loop tools are usually made from round wire; ribbon tools use a flat metal strip that holds a sharper edge. Both are used for trimming and carving.

Why does my trimming tool chatter?

Chatter marks usually mean the clay is too dry or the tool is dull. Slow the wheel, take lighter passes, lightly mist the surface or use a sharper loop.
